The Tooth Affair

Root canal therapy is another common general dental service performed by our professional The Tooth Affair team.

While root canals were once synonymous with pain and discomfort, today’s modern dental equipment and gentle techniques now allow the procedure to be performed within just one or two appointments – and in the comfort of our dental chair.

What is Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy is a procedure that is performed when the nerve or pulp of a tooth is dying or if it has already become infected. The damaged nerve or pulp is removed with special instruments and the root canal is then cleaned out. The cleaning procedure involves a widening and shaping of each canal.

At The Tooth Affair,The procedure is usually carried out with a rubber drape (rubber dam) placed around the tooth to keep out saliva and make the preparation of the canal and canals easier. It may take a number of visits before a canal is finally filled. In this case, a medicament may have to be temporarily sealed in to eliminate all infection. The filling used to seal the root canal is usually made from a combination of materials called gutta percha and a special sealer.

What Causes the Pulp to Become Damaged?

There are a number of reasons why a pulp can become inflamed or infected. These causes can include:

  • Deep tooth decay
  • Decay under a loose filling
  • Injury to the tooth
  • Severe wear of the teeth
  • Severe grinding of the teeth
  • Some types of gum disease

Are You a Candidate for Root Canal?

In some cases, a patient’s pulp can degenerate without giving any symptoms and the only sign of a problem is seen on x-rays. There are some tell-tale signs experienced by many patients who undergo root canal therapy, however, and these are listed below:

  • Extreme dental pain or discomfort, especially when biting
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold foods and drink
  • Swelling of the surrounding tissue
  • A cavity so large it has entered into the nerve
  • An abscess
  • Excessive tooth decay or loss of structure due to previous trauma
