Dental Crowns in Randwick

A crown is a restoration that covers your entire tooth. Unlike a filling that goes inside of your tooth, a crown goes over and around it. Some people refer to them as “caps”.

Reasons for Getting a Dental Crown

Crowns are ideal for situations where a tooth is damaged to the point that it can no longer support a filling. A few examples of when we may recommend a full-coverage treatment include:

  • Extended fillings that have weakened a tooth
  • Implant tooth replacement
  • Advanced wear

Mess-free Dental Impressions

Thanks to advanced digital technology, we can completely bypass the need for dental impressions. After preparing your tooth, we take a virtual scan that immediately transports 3D imaging to our software, which can be shared directly with the lab making your crown. Not only is digital scanning more comfortable, it’s extremely accurate!

What to Expect

Getting a dental crown requires only two appointments. The first visit is to remove the damaged tooth structure and prepare the remaining tooth for a crown to fit over it. After the digital scan is taken, we place a temporary crown to minimise any sensitivity. About two weeks later, the permanent crown is cemented into place.

Price of Dental Crowns

All HICAPS health funds are welcome, including Medicare Child Dental Benefits Scheme and Veterans’ Affairs. In certain circumstances, we offer discounts and payment plans. If you have a gap or are without a health fund, you can apply for financing through DentiCare and Afterpay.

What are the chances that it breaks?

Dental crowns are very strong, they typically won’t break on their own, even though normal wear and tear over the course of many years can wear them down. Some things like falling, severe teeth grinding, biting down on a hard item like ice, bones, pork cracking, etc could chip or break a crown.

Will it look natural?

Yes.

What shade can I get?

Any shade that you desire!
Will it hurt?

No, the crown procedure is painless. Some sensitivity is normal after this procedure, but you should visit the dentist if persistent pain or sensitivity occurs.

How long is the appointment and how many appointments?

The first visit takes about an hour. The second visit normally thirty minutes.

Can I go to work right after?

It is best to avoid chewing hard foods, such as minties, chewing gum, crushing ice, hard candy, pork crackling, nut shells, bones, pop corn, pens, pencils, hair clips. These can break off or dislodge the crown.

Can a crowned tooth get a cavity?

It’s not possible to get a cavity in the crown itself. However, a cavity can develop in the tooth your crown is attached to. Remember to keep it clean and visit your dentist every 6 months.

What happens if my crown falls out or breaks?

If your dental crown falls out or breaks the underlying tooth becomes at risk, but the crown can be often be re-cemented or replaced. Sensitive parts of the tooth will be exposed if the dental crown falls out or breaks.
