Root Canal

Illustration of inside of toothIf you have a tooth that has been subject to trauma, disease or decay, you may not need to have your tooth extracted. At Sunnybank Plaza Dental, we believe in taking all possible measures to save your natural teeth. The root canal treatments we offer can do just that, preserving your smile and allowing you to keep your tooth.

Your root canal treatment is performed while you are under local anaesthesia. You won’t have to feel concerned about discomfort, and we can even handle more complex cases.

When Is a Root Canal Necessary?

Your tooth is made up of several layers that lead to the nerve, or pulp of the tooth, which extends all the way into the jaw. If you experience disease, decay or trauma, the pulp of the tooth can be damaged, infected or inflamed. It’s often the cause of toothaches and requires a root canal treatment.

A root canal treatment saves the tooth from having to be extracted and prevents bacteria from returning to the nerve of the tooth.

What’s Involved in a Root Canal

Though in years past, the term “root canal” might make you think of pain, today’s modern dentistry makes the procedure simple and easy for you. The four steps involved include

  • Diagnosing your problem
  • Cleaning out the tooth’s root canal
  • Sealing off the root canal
  • Placing a final restoration, usually a crown

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Your treatment time and amount of appointments required will depend on the nature of your issue. Generally, we schedule three separate visits 1-2 weeks apart. Each appointment will take about 30-60 minutes. After the procedure is completed, we’ll likely recommend a crown that will give the damaged tooth greater stability.
