What Is Gum Disease?

Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is when the tissues that surround and support your teeth become infected. It’s a leading cause of tooth loss, though it can be painless and you may not even know that you have it. If left untreated, you can end up losing your teeth.

The Cause of Gum Disease

Gum disease results from a buildup of plaque, which is created by bacteria that produces damaging toxins that take a toll on the health of your gums. The first stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. You might notice that your gums are swollen, red or bleed when you brush and floss. You can still reverse gum disease at this stage with regular brushing, flossing and dental checkups.

The second and final stage is called periodontitis, in which the gums and bone responsible for supporting the teeth become damaged. The gums will recede, losing shape and making it difficult to clean teeth, which leads to loosened teeth that need to be extracted or fall out on their own. This stage of gum disease is irreversible, though it can be managed with stringent oral hygiene habits and periodic visits to the dentist.

The Common Symptoms of Gum Disease

There are certain signs you should watch out for. If you have any of the following, you may have gum disease:

  • A change in the fit of your partial dentures
  • A difference in your bite
  • Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing
  • Chronic bad breath
  • Gums that pull away from teeth
  • Loose teeth
  • Pus between the gums and teeth
  • Tender, red and swollen gums
