What Causes Black Triangles?
Each tooth is shaped in a way that it conforms nicely with its neighbour and the underlying gum tissue. We call the pointed gingiva (gum tissue) between your teeth the “papilla”. Sometimes the papilla creeps back; usually because of gum disease or some type of traumatic injury to the tissue. When it does, it leaves an open space behind. We tend to call these shadowy areas a “black triangle” because of the way they look when you smile.
Left untreated, black triangles aren’t just a cosmetic concern. They’re also at a higher risk of developing tooth decay and gum disease around them because of their tendency to collect food and plaque.
Gum recession is a serious condition that can contribute to tooth sensitivity and decay. Under control, it also poses as aesthetic concern. That’s where Bioclear comes in.
Bioclear is a resin bonding process that helps to fill in the open gaps between teeth at the gumlines. The process enhances aesthetics but also limits the risk of food impaction or plaque buildup. It was developed by cosmetic dentists in the U.S. as a conservative alternative to more comprehensive and traditional aesthetic procedures. Rather, it focuses on the source of the problem. We’re proud to be one of the only dentists in our community to offer this unique service.
Instead of larger veneers or crowns that cover larger areas, Bioclear only affects the parts of teeth near the sides and gumlines, creating a fuller and more contoured shape to each tooth.
Depending on how many teeth and contact areas need to be addressed, the procedure typically lasts around 90 minutes. The composite material is injected between teeth and shaped to conform to the natural curvature of your tooth’s frame.
Although it’s relatively non-invasive, some people do request sleep dentistry to make the process an efficient and relaxing experience. Milder analgesics such as laughing gas – along with our noise-cancelling headphones – tend to be more than adequate. Many of our patients fall asleep during their appointment or distract themselves by watching a movie. It’s simpler than you might expect!
Each Bioclear treatment begins with an individual consultation. During your visit we’ll discuss your concerns and the severity of your black triangles. It’s essential to screen you for issues such as gum recession and periodontal disease, to make sure the procedure will be effective.
During your exam, we’ll take a series of photographs and measurements. From there, we’ll discuss what’s possible and possibly even review before-and-after photos of similar cases that we’ve completed, giving you an idea of what to expect.
